CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF SERVING SUN VALLEY 1967 – 2017

The Sun Valley General Improvement District is celebrating 50 years of service to the Sun Valley Community, providing quality water, sewer, recreational and garbage services. It all started in 1967 when the District was formed. Developers acquired and changed property throughout the picturesque valley in the late 50s and early 60s which was named “Sun Valley” by H.L. Gepford who remarked that the beautiful sunrises and sunsets turned the hills gold like the sun. Developers such as Mr. Gepford created sub-divisions and developments named Juniper Terrace, Juniper Heights and Juniper Mobile Home Estates located at the north end of Sun Valley. The developers worked to establish lots of multiple sizes and create streets where the lots were situated. These lots included septic systems and wells which eventually led to the ground water becoming polluted due to construction and development activity that lead to high nitrate levels in the soil. A decision was made to form a public utility to assure current and future valley residents of safe drinking water and sanitary sewer services in the years to come.

In 1967 Sun Valley General Improvement District (SVGID) was formed as the Valley’s water and sanitation district established under Nevada Revised Statute, Chapter 318 and has operated as a quasi-municipal entity and chartered today to provide water, sewer, garbage, and recreation services throughout the community.

Known as “The District” since its formation as a small water utility, to its current position in 2017, the District is one of Nevada’s largest improvement districts, serving over 6000 residential and commercial customers and proudly providing parks, recreational services and community events for thousands more.

The District staff maintains an estimated 100 miles of water mains, 120 miles of sewer mains, two sewer vaults, several pressure reducing vaults and pumping stations, and nine water storage water tanks. In 1990 with the assistance of members of the general public, the District acquired the garbage authority. The District was able to redirect the franchise fee from Washoe County’s general fund to the District’s garbage fund. These
funds are now being used for community-based programs,
senior discounts, beautification projects, and public education.

The District acquired recreation authority in September, 2009 during the economic downturn and saved the parks and the pool in the community from being closed. This new authority allowed The District to assume ownership of the Sun Valley Community Park, Sun Valley Robert and Norma G. Fink Pool Complex, Gepford Park, Highland Ranch Park, and Sun Mesa Park. The District is committed to providing its residents with a range of park and recreation opportunities to improve health and quality of life.

For the past five decades, the SVGID has been delivering quality drinking water to the Sun Valley community. The District continually strives to ensure that all aspects of Sun Valley’s water distribution, sewer, garbage, recreation, and community services are efficient while providing exceptional service to more than 20,000 residents. From the first Board of Trustees first Chair to the current Chairperson Sandra Ainsworth, the trustees and staff of the Sun Valley General Improvement District will continue to be committed to another 50 years of exceptional service.
