Bio

Carmen Ortiz serves as Secretary of the Sun Valley General Improvement District (SVGID), where she is honored to represent her neighbors and advocate for the needs of the community. In addition to her role in public service, she works as an Education Support Professional with the Washoe County School District, contributing to student success and supporting local families. Carmen brings a strong commitment to education and civic engagement to both her work in the classroom and her leadership within the district.

First elected as a Trustee in 2016 and re-elected in both 2020 and 2024, Carmen has served the Sun Valley community with dedication and heart. As a Trustee, Carmen represents the SVGID on the Pool Pact Board, working to ensure that district facilities are properly insured while keeping costs low for rate payers. Since 2017, she has served as SVGID’s representative to the Nevada Recreation and Parks Society, contributing to statewide efforts to expand and improve recreational opportunities, creating and maintaining public spaces where families can gather, enjoy the outdoors, and build a strong sense of community pride.

Her consistent leadership reflects a sincere commitment to making Sun Valley a place where everyone feels connected and valued. In 2019, she earned her Nevada Certified Public Official certification, expanding her knowledge in community engagement, operations, finance, employee relations, and board governance. She has also gained meaningful legislative experience representing the SVGID on policy matters that directly impact Sun Valley. From 2015 to 2024, Carmen chaired the Sun Valley Citizen Advisory Board, where she advocated for residents, including senior citizens, and worked to ensure community voices were heard.

She remains actively involved in committees dedicated to protecting and supporting Sun Valley through collaboration and transparency. Committed to fiscal responsibility, community wellbeing and thoughtful planning, Carmen continues to advocate for the maintenance of safe, reliable water systems. Carmen takes pride in being accessible and responsive to the residents of Sun Valley. Whether attending local events, listening to concerns, or collaborating with fellow board members, she is always focused on putting community first. As Sun Valley continues to grow, Carmen remains committed to protecting its character, improving services, and ensuring that every voice is heard in shaping the future of the district.
