NOT JUST YOUR WATER COMPANY
The Sun Valley General Improvement District not only governs the water for its customers but also the sewer, garbage, and parks and recreation. Therefore, monthly bills are not just for water service. Based on the residence or commercial property, most customers are billed for water, sewer and the recreation fee. The few remaining customers that are on private wells are billed for sewer and the recreation fee. Customers whose premises are in Sparks (“5 Ridges”) are billed for water, the recreation fee, the Capital Improvement Project fee, and City of Sparks Right-Of-Way fee. Waste Management bills customers directly for trash and recycling services. The District Board and Staff work diligently and consistently to keep rates as low as possible and notifies customers of any potential rate changes through Public Tariff Hearings which are noticed on billing statements, on the District website and Facebook, in quarterly newsletters, and in the local public notice section of the Reno Gazette Journal.
KTMB CLEAN UP & E-WASTE RESULTS
The District partnered with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful for the annual Great Community Clean-up in May. Volunteers joined the cause resulting in the removal of a combined 18,790 pounds of waste including 12,000 pound of trash, 117 tires, 4 vehicles and more. The District also held a month-long electronics recycling event in partnership with Intelligent Lifecycle Solutions in April. This event was successful with the collection of 89 televisions, 6 monitors and a total of 3,286 pounds of recycled electronics. As a reminder, Intelligent Lifecycle Solutions accepts free electronic recycling year-round for most items, fees apply for TV’s and CRT monitors. For more information, call them at 775-690-9348. If you are in need of disposing appliances/heavy metal, Sims Metal accepts recycling year-round. For more information, call Sims at 775-331-3023.
WINTERIZING TIPS
Cold weather is coming—don’t forget to prepare your outdoor water systems. A few quick steps now can help you avoid costly repairs later.
• Shut off and drain outdoor faucets – Turn off the water supply and let the water run out.
• Disconnect garden hoses – Store them indoors to keep them from cracking.
• Cover spigots – Use insulated covers or wrap them to protect against freezing.
• Winterize sprinkler systems – Shut them down and drain the lines.
• Clear gutters and drains – Keep water flowing away from your home to prevent ice buildup.
Taking these steps will help keep our homes and neighborhood safe and ready for winter!
STATE GRANT UPDATE
The District continues to make progress on two major state grant-funded infrastructure projects.
Water Meter Replacement Project:
The District began replacing approximately 6,000 older water meters with more accurate Sensus iPERL meters on April 1, 2026. From April through August, 1,640 meters have been replaced. The new meters will provide more accurate consumption data and support the District’s ongoing conservation efforts.
New Main Pump Station Project:
Construction of the new Main Pump Station is also moving forward. This project is joint-funded between the District and 5 Ridges Development. Work completed to-date includes site preparation,
excavation, underground water piping, electrical installation, concrete foundations, and installation of pump equipment. Approximately 80% of the new pump building has been constructed. Current work includes installation of a backup generator at the Juniper Terrace Tank Site.
Together, these projects represent important investments in the District’s infrastructure and long-term service to the Sun Valley community.
POOL SEASON THANK YOU’S
The District wants to send a special thank you to the Fink Family, Hobey’s Casino, and Commissioner Garcia for their continued support sponsoring this year’s FREE SWIM days! A big thank you to our fantastic 2026 Lifeguards. This year’s staff went above and beyond to serve the community by expanding the swim lesson program, making the health and safety of our pool patrons their top
priority, while providing a fun and refreshing way to spend the summer days. If you know anyone who enjoys the water, being outdoors, and helping others, please have them contact the District to be added to next year’s lifeguard interest list.
