Water Use During A Drought

As we enter our 4th year of the drought many customers are concerned about water supply and what they can do to help. The Sun Valley General Improvement District buys water wholesale from the Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) who owns and operates the only water treatment plants in the Truckee Meadows. TMWA also operates several groundwater wells in the region to offset the surface water use from the Truckee River. TMWA is assuring us that they are prepared to meet the demands of all water users by utilizing its drought storage located in Donner and Independence Lakes. TMWA is also asking that all its customers including the Sun Valley General Improvement District reduce water use by 10% . For water saving tips to meet this goal, please visit the District website at www.svgid.com/conservation.

Farewell And Good Luck!

Mike Ariztia has resigned his position as the District’s Public Works Director for a general manager position at a water district in Montana . Over the course of his 18-year career with the District, Mike has been instrumental in overseeing many developments and improvements to the valley while carrying out the mission and goals of the District. Although we are saddened by his leaving and we all will miss our friend and colleague, we are happy for him and his family and wish Mike the best of luck in his new position.

Recreation Fee Increase

In 2010 the Sun Valley General Improvement District acquired all community parks within Sun Valley and the Sun Valley Swimming pool from Washoe County. The acquisition occurred when the county was preparing to close the pool indefinitely and reduce operation, maintenance, and security at the parks.

At that time, the District’s Board of Trustees established a recreational fee of $3.02 per month to help pay for the operation of these facilities. For the last 5 years this fee has remained unchanged; however, due to the rising cost of operation it was recommended to increase the fee. The District held a Tariff meeting on April 21st to discuss all options and seek input from residents, then moved to increase the fee to $3.50 per month.

Trustee Margaret Reinhardt

First of all I would like to thank you for electing me to represent you on the SVGID Board of Trustees for 3 consecutive terms. It has been both an honor and a privilege to serve you the past 11 years. I have sat on RTC committees representing your interests on the Sun Valley Blvd beautification project and the committee to study the Pyramid Hwy/395 interceptor.  Also, I’ve served on the design team for the Red Hill Park and as secretary on the Western Regional Water Commission. It has been both an experience and education that could not have been achieved without your votes of confidence.

Reflecting back upon my 50 years as a Sun Valley resident I can honestly say I wouldn’t have wanted to live anywhere else.  To state a few advantages Sun Valley suffers very little when it comes to natural disasters, property taxes are lower here and home prices are affordable to those with low and medium incomes giving many, including myself, the opportunity to become home owners. For raising children and enjoying pets we have been blessed with 3rd acre zoning.  I knew at first sight that Sun Valley was to be the place I would raise my children and realize my dreams. I can’t thank you all enough.
