Washoe County Extra Mile Award

The Sun Valley General Improvement District doesn’t do things to get recognized, but it is nice when it happens. We are proud to be the recipient of the Washoe County Health District’s Extra Mile Award for unanimously voting to approve and implement a smoke and vape free environment at all of the Sun Valley Parks. The Extra Mile Award recognizes local businesses for going above and beyond the requirements set forth in the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act (NCIAA) making the conscious decision to go smoke-free when the law does not require them to.

2019 Community Service Awards

We would not be here today if it hadn’t been for the amazing support we have received along the way. Thank you to our 2019 Community Service Award recipients! Trustee Garth Elliott was recognized for always being the voice for his constituents during District board meetings and voice of property owners at the Washoe County Commission meetings. Mr. Elliott’s number one goal on the District Board was to try and keep rates affordable for the community. He was instrumental with getting Washoe County to reinstate the Sun Valley Citizen Advisory Cab and participated with various working committees regarding improvements for the Sun Valley community. The Fink Family was recognized for generously donating a FREE Swim Day each year at the Robert and Norma Fink Sun Valley Pool Complex in honor of their parents. Both Robert and Norma Fink were instrumental with getting the pool approved for the Sun Valley community. Commissioner Kitty Jung was recognized for her generous donation of her Commissioner Discretionary funds to be used for Sun Valley recreation. SVGID was able to use those funds to offer a free swim day at the Sun Valley Pool and funds to assist with re-roofing of the Sun Valley Pool Pump room. Without these funds, otherwise these expenses would have been paid by the District customers.

Veteran’s Appreciation

On November 9, 2019 , the Sun Valley General Improvement District held its 10th Annual Veteran’s Appreciation Celebration in partnership with Washoe County Human Services. The District was thrilled to have over 40 veterans, active military and their families join us for a pancake breakfast following the honorary ceremony by numerous local and state elected officials. Thank you to the numerous local veterans resource groups that took part in the event, as well.

Recycling Do’s & Don’ts

Single Stream Recycling is a big time saver. But did you know that most of us put non-recyclable items in the recycling bin can face fines because of it. Please check out Waste Management and/or Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful for a complete list of what to recycle and what to toss.

Pedestrian Safety

With so many distractions for drivers and pedestrians, we need to be more aware when we are on the road. Remember to use crosswalks and wear light clothing when out walking. Drivers and pedestrians should put phones away and pay attention to their surroundings. For more safety tips, visit Zero Fatalities Nevada.

Radon Testing

Radon is a silent killer not often talked about. It is the primary cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers. January is Radon Detection Month in Nevada. For more information visit Radon Nevada or pick up your FREE Radon Kit at the District Office.
